OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
To implement the global immunization vision and strategy (GIVS) with respect to protecting more people, introducing new vaccines and technologies, integrating immunization, other linked health interventions and surveillance, and immunizing in the context of global interdependence; to achieve established global and regional goals including maintaining poliomyelitis-free status, achieving measles elimination, hepatitis B control, and maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination by 2012; to achieve 90% immunization coverage in member states, and at least 80% coverage in every district, to reduce mortality from vaccine preventable diseases by two-thirds compared to year 2000 levels.
Description of duties:
1. Under the supervision of the Director of Combating Communicable Diseases, provide strategic direction, management and supervision for the Regional Office Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) Unit; advise the Regional Director on immunization priorities and policies; coordinate with other Units and Divisions within the Regional Office to maximize efficiencies and synergies of initiatives of mutual benefit. Oversee preparation and finalize strategic plans of action, budget proposals, technical guidelines, monitoring and evaluation activities, and special studies.


2. Provides support to WHO country office country activities such as:
Identify candidates and sources of recruitment for consultants and staff and attend to administrative matters related to recruitment.
Make recommendations on the selection of supplies and equipment;
Provide technical and administrative advice and support to staff and consultants.
Monitor and advise on effective workplan development and implementation

3. In collaboration with country staff, support national authorities in developing plans, identifying financial resources, coordinating with partners, implement activities for major initiatives related to immunization objectives.

4. Organize and coordinate training and professional development programmes for regional and country staff, as well as national counterparts, including conferences, workshops and seminars, country and regional exchange visits, fellowships, etc.

5. Undertake related duties as required such as:
Promote the development of research programmes and capabilities;
Participate in technical meetings as representative of WHO;
Establish and maintain good working relations within the organization and with international and national partners
Act for another regional staff member when necessary.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
University degree in medicine with advanced degree in public health or epidemiology is essential. Training in epidemiology is an advantage.
Skills:
Leadership and programme management skills; sound knowledge of the principles, standard practices and methodology in public health and of communicable disease control. Skill as technical negotiator, organizer and administrator. Ability to establish and foster harmonious working relationship within the Unit and with Regional Office, Country Office, National and International colleagues. Ability to adapt to diverse educational and cultural backgrounds and maintain a high standard of personal conduct.

Other Skills (e.g. IT): Computer literacy: word processing, spreadsheet and graphics software.
Experience:
10 years of experience in communicable disease control at senior level, including four years of international experience in advisory and/or teaching capacity in the field of communicable diseases control in developing countries. 4 years of programme leadership and management experience; minimum of 2 years experience working in EPI is desirable.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English is essential. Working knowledge of French is an advantage.
Annual salary: (Net of tax)
USD79 537 at single rate
USD85 615 with primary dependants

Post Adjustment: 44.70 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
