The Secretariat of the WTO is seeking to fill the position of Statistical Assistant in the Integrated Data Base (IDB) Section of the Economic Research and Statistics Division to assist in technical cooperation related work pursuant to the Doha Development Agenda. Serving staff members interested in the position are also invited to apply.
General Functions
The main functions of this post are to assist the Head of the Consolidated Tariff Schedules (CTS) Unit in the maintenance and updating of the CTS database. Under the supervision by the Head of Unit the incumbent is expected to perform the following duties:
1. Assist in the maintenance and updating of the Consolidated Tariff Schedule database. This includes tasks such as entering new data into the CTS database and revising CTS data to include changes related to the introduction of new versions of the Harmonized System (HS) nomenclature and other modifications to the Schedules of concessions.
2. Assist in the verification of nomenclature consistency of acceding Members in the context of their accession process.
3. Assist if required the IDB processing Unit in processing IDB submissions.
4. Respond to ad hoc requests for retrieval of statistical information from the IDB and/or CTS databases originating from other Divisions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
In addition to completion of secondary school or equivalent technical or commercial school, formal training or proven expertise in statistical tools and methods is required. The formal training may include specific courses or university studies undertaken in a relevant area. Good knowledge of computer applications relevant to statistical work is also necessary.
Knowledge:
Good knowledge/working experience in the areas of customs tariffs and HS nomenclature classifications and computer software for applied statistics, including MS Excel and database management systems, particularly MS Access applications and SQL language. Knowledge of SAS and trade statistics would be an advantage.
Work Experience:
At least eight years of relevant and progressively responsible experience in the field of statistics, which may include university studies and/or professional training. Proven practical experience in maintaining data files and databases and applying basic statistical tools and methods including the use of standard software is required.
Languages:
Proficiency in English or French is required; a working knowledge of the other working language is an advantage. Knowledge of a third working language (Spanish) would be an advantage.

The position may be offered at a lower grade if the selected candidate does not fully meet all the required qualifications.
