OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
The Cancer Information (CIN) Section at IARC is responsible for the collection, analysis and dissemination of information concerning the global cancer burden. In order to achieve this objective, CIN Section works closely with and provides support to cancer registries around the world and, in particular, seeks to increase capacity for cancer registration in low- and medium-resource countries. Alongside the production of online global cancer statistics tools, incorporated into the CancerMondial website (http://www-dep.iarc.fr/), the CIN Section conducts research in the descriptive epidemiology of cancer making use of both routinely collected datasets and data specifically made available through collaborators worldwide. Major themes of the research within CIN include analysis of geographic patterns of cancer, time trends in incidence and mortality and the estimation of the future burden of disease. Part of the research program also involves the development of novel methodological approaches to the analysis of such data.
Description of duties:
Within the framework of the CIN Section and under the guidance of the Head and other professional staff within the Section, the incumbent is expected to:
1. contribute to the planning, design, implementation and conduct of on-going and future descriptive studies in cancer epidemiology;
2. actively participate in data collection, quality improvement and statistical analyses of on-going and future studies;
3. contribute to the preparation and writing of scientific manuscripts, articles and reports based on on-going and future studies;
4. contribute to the development, coordination and writing of grant applications in the relevant research areas;
5. contribute to CIN Section educational and training activities within IARC and at other locations by provision of course presentations, preparation of teaching material and support to students;
6. contribute to CIN Section technical support and development of cancer registry capacity in low- and middle-income resource settings;
7. perform any other related duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential: Advanced university degree (MD or PhD) in epidemiology, medical statistics or a related field.
Desirable: First degree in relevant scientific subject or mathmatics/statistics.
Skills:
Very good knowledge of the descriptive epidemiology of cancer and the processes involved in cancer registration. Proven/developed organization and communication skills.
Familiarity with appropriate statistical software e.g. STATA.

Experience:
Essential: At least two years of relevant professional experience at an international level in the field of descriptive epidemiology; experience in international research projects involving vital statistics; good publication record.
Desirable: Experience with cancer registry derived datasets; experience in the handling and analysis of large routine datasets; experience in the development of grant applications involving multiple partners.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of English and working knowledge of French.

EURO 54 890 (with slight variations) at single rate
